What is “phantom power?”?
I’m looking to buy a condenser mic and there’s all this talk about “phantom power” what is it? is it necessary for using a condenser mic straight into a computer? (is that even possible!?) help!
Phantom power is when the mixing desk sends a 48V DC power supply over the 3 pin XLR balanced audio input.
It is used to power up condesor microphones and DI boxes. The 48V DC is applied equally to the hot and cold pins on the XLR connector and is referenced to the ground on the cable shield.
It is known as phantom power because it doesn’t interfere with signals from standard dynamic microphones.
Withhout power your condenser MIC will not work, so unless it has a battery compartment or your computer’s soundcard has a 3 pin XLR input or balanced (3 contact) 1/4″ jack which is capable of supplying phantom power (NB this is very unlikely unless you have a high end professional sound card) then you won’t be able to use this microphone with your PC and you will have to use a dynamic microphone instead.
